FOS Creates Immersive Underwater Experience

If you can’t take 300 guests to the ocean, you can certainly bring the ocean to them. That’s exactly what this B’nai Mitzvah (combined Bar and Bat Mitzvah) achieved with its “Underwater” theme, which submerged guests into a world beneath the waves. This complex design by FOS Decor Center explored the rich diversity of the ocean, highlighting all the brilliant colours and textures of a tropical reef while indulging guests in the comforts of a five-star cruise.

Inspired by all things aquatic, FOS Creative Director Miki Klevan and his highly creative team pulled out all the stops for this event, transforming every inch of the space into an immersive underwater experience.

At the beach

The beach-themed lobby prepared guests for evening at sea with a mini tropical getaway. The space featured a handmade tiki hut, decaled bars, palm trees and a black lounge decorated with surfboard seating.

Under the sea

In the main event space, oceanic backdrops surrounded the room, plunging guests into the ocean depths. Above hovered a menacing shark among clusters of iridescent jellyfish made from light fabrics that shimmered and swayed as if floating by, creating the illusion that guests were walking on the sea floor. Along the walls the FOS team created three dimensional reef vignettes from rocks, props and green moss to give the scene dimension and texture, and set up four custom decaled bars, each sporting its own underwater scene.

Table shoals

The highlight of the event’s decor was the centerpieces, which took traditional and familiar decor elements – such as manzanita trees, amaranthus and vases – and transformed them into an aquatic marvel. Half of the centerpieces consisted of painted Manzanita tree “corals” with hanging decorations. The other half of the centerpieces were glass vases filled with water, coral, coloured pebbles and live fish, topped with a coral-inspired arrangement featuring hanging amaranthus, red Manznita branches, and sword fern. Each centerpiece rested on a mossy green base that looked like algae and sea moss, which were decorated with seashells and scattered pieces of lost treasure.

Each table also featured a starfish table number on a twine-wrapped base, irregular “oyster” charger plates reminiscent of worn sea glass, and a colourful table linen with matching spandex chair covers.

Sleek retreat

As a break from the complex underwater world created with the rest of the decor, a light white lounge area popped against the vibrant colours, inviting guests to mingle and relax. The lounge featured white sofas and ottomans, Manhattan coffee tables, and square glass votives filled with blue pebbles, a bright white LED light, and simple red manzanita corals.
