Scrubs in the City: A Night to Transform 2024

On a warm June evening, 1,400 guests arrived at Evergreen Brick Works in Toronto for the 23rd edition of Scrubs in the City. This year, the SickKids Foundation event took its inspiration from one of the most vibrant cities in the world, Mexico City. With a dazzling atmosphere, bold entertainment, and fantastic food, the event raised an impressive $1.4 million to support crucial upgrades for neurophysiology and neurodiagnostic lab equipment at SickKids.

Stepping into the event, guests were transported to Mexico City. The space was a visual masterpiece, thanks to the incredible work of Opulent Event Designs, who turned the rustic venue into a vibrant celebration of Mexican culture. The highlight? A massive ceiling installation created by a Mexican artist, Luis Roja (Dia de los Muertos Collective), bathed the dance floor in a kaleidoscope of colour and light. It served as the focal point, drawing everyone in and setting the stage for an unforgettable night of fun, food, and fundraising.

Entertainment was essential in capturing the spirit of Mexico City. Sole Power set the tone with a dynamic lineup that kept the energy high. From a live band that had the dance floor packed all night to vibrant traditional Mexican dancers from Ballet Folklorico Puro Mexico, a Mariachi band, and eye-catching stiltwalkers roaming the venue, every corner was buzzing with activity. Wherever guests turned, something exciting was unfolding.

And then there was the food. TOBEN Food by Design served a contemporary spin on Mexican classics that had everyone talking. From a lively Birria Taco Cart to juicy Carne Asada and a build-your-own Churro Sundae Bar, the menu offered an elevated, playful take on Mexican street food. Marketplace partners like Chula Taberna Mexicana, Holts Café, Los Compas Tacos, and the Me.n.u Food Truck added even more authentic flavours to the mix, creating a true feast for the senses.

Of course, Scrubs in the City wasn’t just about throwing a great party—it’s about the cause. The funds raised will go directly toward upgrading the neurophysiology and neurodiagnostic labs at SickKids. These upgrades will help improve the speed and precision of diagnoses and treatments for conditions like epilepsy, tumours, and stroke. The success of this year’s event is a testament to the incredible generosity of a community dedicated to helping the children who rely on SickKids.

In the words of the producers: “We are so grateful to our committee members, sponsors, partners, guests, donors, and volunteers who made Scrubs Mexico City such a huge success. It was a night to remember, filled with exhilarating entertainment and mouthwatering food, all inspired by the vibrancy of a Mexican fiesta. The funds raised will help SickKids keep pace with innovation, ensuring the best possible outcomes for children with neurological conditions.”

No event of this scale comes together without an incredible team behind it. SickKids spearheaded the planning, with presenting sponsor Holt Renfrew and major sponsor Mantella Corporation leading the charge. Vendors like Element Event Solutions (Chair-man Mills) and Divine Furniture Rental ensured the décor and seating were perfect, while Sole Power and Epiq Vision handled the AV seamlessly. George Pimentel Photography captured the night’s most memorable moments, ensuring the magic of Scrubs in the City 2024 will be remembered long after the last guest has left.

At its core, this event is about making a real difference in the lives of children at SickKids. Yes, the stilt walkers and vibrant décor were impressive, and yes, the food was unforgettable, but the true highlight was the impact made possible by the generosity of everyone who came together for this one special night. In the end, Scrubs in the City 2024 wasn’t just a party, it was a chance to change lives. And what could be more spectacular than that?
