CSE: How has your career evolved over the years, and what were some key moments that shaped your journey in the AV industry?

RC: “In 2008, I had a turning point in my career. After 25 years of running my first business in the entertainment and AV industry, I started a new journey with bb Blanc, now one of Canada’s leading creative audiovisual production companies. Starting over was interesting, but I had a quarter-century of experience to draw from. This experience allowed me to avoid many pitfalls and mistakes, making my path much quicker the second time around. Within 24 months, I achieved what had previously taken 25 years.”

This wasn’t just a professional restart; it was a reinvention. Rennie also credits his involvement in industry associations like ILEA for broadening his perspective and deepening his passion. “At the time, I was on the board with Leslee Bell’s son, Greg, and we became great friends. Seeing great Canadian companies producing amazing events and winning awards inspired me to elevate bb Blanc to new heights.”

CSE: What drives you? What fuels your passion for AV technology and keeps you striving for excellence?

RC: “Excellence is my driving force. At bb Blanc, we’re passionate about delivering events that go above and beyond. At the scale we’re operating, this requires a huge team effort. I’ve had the privilege of bringing together exceptional talent over the years.”

He pauses, reflecting on his team. “I’ve watched them grow with me and collaborate to exceed even what I had initially imagined possible. That’s incredibly motivating. When we can make an event so immersive that it’s felt, not just seen or heard, that’s when I know we’ve achieved something special.”

Rennie’s leadership is defined by his ability to inspire and empower. He isn’t simply focused on the technology behind events but on the emotional impact they leave. His passion for excellence resonates in every word and every project, driving him to push boundaries and innovate continually.

CSE: In your opinion, what makes your AV business stand out in a competitive industry?

RC: “What sets bb Blanc apart is our innovative approach to event experiences. As a creative audiovisual production company, we go beyond just technical execution. We infuse our solutions with a certain flair, a unique twist that captivates audiences from start to finish.”

For Rennie, the focus is on creating immersive, memorable experiences that linger in the minds of attendees. “Our creative use of audiovisual technology ensures that each event is not just seen and heard but truly experienced. That’s what we aim for—moments that resonate.”

CSE: Every entrepreneur faces hurdles. What were some of the biggest challenges you encountered while building your business, and how did you navigate them?

RC: “The biggest challenge came in 2008 when I had to start over with bb Blanc. While it wasn’t my choice, it turned out to be one of the best things that ever happened to me. Believing in myself and my ability to create something unique for the industry was crucial.”

Rennie’s calm demeanour belies the weight of his words as he discusses the impact of the pandemic. “Having to sustain the company for six months with no revenue was daunting. However, this crisis became a catalyst for innovation. We developed new ideas and approaches that catapulted bb Blanc to a new level in the industry.”

CSE: Reflecting on your work, which projects do you consider to be the most successful, and what contributed to their success?

RC: “With over 25,000 events in my career, it’s challenging to select just a few standouts. However, at bb Blanc, the projects that truly shine are those where we pushed beyond our perceived limits.”

He highlights the annual collaboration with Honda Manufacturing of Canada. “Since 2014, we’ve transformed their holiday party from a 1,400-person event into a spectacular gathering of over 3,500 attendees. By consistently elevating the experience with innovative audiovisual production and entertainment, we’ve created an event that guests eagerly anticipate year after year.”

Rennie’s ability to consistently deliver excellence isn’t just a reflection of his skill—it’s a testament to his commitment to understanding and exceeding client expectations. His success lies in his dedication to creating experiences that feel both grand and personal.

CSE: Given the rapid pace of technological advancement, how do you stay ahead in incorporating tech into your business, and how do you think it will shape the future of events?

RC: “At bb Blanc, our mission is to create unforgettable experiences, with technology serving as a key enabler. By staying ahead of the curve and integrating cutting-edge innovations, we ensure our clients’ events are as impactful and immersive as they are memorable.”

He delves into recent advancements: “Laser-based projection, LED technology, and advanced media servers have revolutionized what we can do. Our Studio 41, a virtual production studio, allows us to create dynamic, immersive backgrounds that completely transform the visual environment for virtual or hybrid events.”

CSE: What advice would you offer to someone just entering the AV or event industry, particularly those who might be unsure of their place?

RC: “My primary advice is to have patience. Identify what truly drives you and where your passion lies, then channel all your energy into that area. Trust that as you develop your skills and showcase your talents, the right people and projects will naturally gravitate towards you.”

“This industry is incredibly demanding, but the rewards are extraordinary. When you see the joy on people’s faces or hear them talk about the memories you helped create, there’s nothing else like it.”
